Clouds in IT. Part Two

Article about “Clouds in IT”. Part Two.

Cloud Storage

Every year, life on the planet accelerates its rhythm.
Development of technology leads to the fact that operations that previously required days or even weeks, for example, sending correspondence, today take seconds and even fractions of seconds.

In the context of reduced time, the business has new requirements for data availability. Imagine the situation, an employee went on a business trip to the presentation of the project, but, due to a strike by aviation workers, he lost his luggage, along with all the files and information on the project. In fact, the presentation was disrupted, the contract was not signed, no profit was received.

Solution is needed.

The main goal of cloud storage is to provide the ability to work with data wherever possible and from any device.

Many of you may have already encountered cloud storage. For example, email is a special case of cloud storage, as you can store the information you need in the mailbox, but do not forget that this is not the main functionality of this service and, moreover, email providers usually impose certain restrictions (quotas) on the size of mailboxes, attached files, etc. to avoid filling it.

Therefore, over time and with increasing demand for online data storage, providers began to open services on a pay as you go platform. Thus, the company provides a certain amount of disk space on a free basis, with certain restrictions, such as storing documents or photos exclusively, but it is proposed to purchase additional space, features and services.

Pros and cons of cloud storage

The most important and fat advantage is the ability to access data wherever you have access to Internet, which allows you not to worry about the local availability of the necessary data.
The ability to back up critical data to the cloud, as most providers of cloud storage services provide data safety and security.
The ability to integrate services with cloud storage services. An example is a video surveillance system. In the case of local data storage, an attacker can destroy the video recorder upon penetration and there will be no evidence of a crime. Cloud storage completely eliminates this risk.
Cloud storage of photographs is also very convenient, because you probably had situations when the phone ran out of space due to photos and videos, and there was no computer to copy information at hand.
In the case of using cloud storage, photos and videos via the Internet are recorded on disk space in the cloud, so local copy can be deleted after synchronization, freeing up space on the smartphone.
The downside, of course, is security and privacy.
Several dozens of times hackers stole personal data of famous people and posted compromising photos on the network. Of course, the main reason for such hacks is the human factor and weak passwords, such as 123, 123456, qwerty. In this case there is no one to blame but yourself.
However, everyone makes mistakes, so, on June 19, 2011, within 4 hours, as a result of an error in the key transfer algorithm, anyone could get full access to any account of one of the largest providers of Dropbox cloud storage.

Ease of use of the clouds.

In fact, even a child can use the cloud, moreover, most of the operations take place in the background and do not require user participation.
Almost all cloud providers have their own software for data synchronization, and manufacturers of equipment and operating systems even embed this software.
As an example of iCloud from Apple, Google Disk in Android, OneDrive into Microsoft Windows, as well as Samsung, which upon the first launch of Galaxy smartphones gives an annual voucher for 50 GB of storage on Dropbox.

A few links to popular shareware cloud storage

• Amazon Web Services – in fact, Amazon, as one of the pioneers of cloud technology, is worthy of a separate article, which, in principle, I can do, but obviously later. – https://aws.amazon.com
• Suddenly, the Chinese decided not to take quality, but quantity and made their own cloud, where everyone, if you can figure it out how to, can get 36 TB of disk space forever – http://yunpan.360.cn/
• I would also like to add a photo cloud from Yahoo – this is Flickr, which provides 1 TB for storing photos.
The problem is that in Kazakhstan it is regularly blocked and opened, but there is VPN to help you.
In short, clouds are great, clouds are good. If you still do not have cloud storage – just get it.
